Val J. Halamandaris and Mother Teresa

The Caring Institute is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the principles of caring, integrity, and public service.

Founded by Val J. Halamandaris in 1985 to honor and promote the values of caring, integrity, and public service. Inspired by Mother Teresa, the Institute believes that caring is the one-word distillation of the Golden Rule. We also maintain that most problems can be solved by individuals who transcend self and devote their lives to serving others, especially the disadvantaged, poor, disabled, and dying. The Institute celebrates these people and holds them up as role models to be emulated by all.

In addition to its Awards program, the Institute gives scholarship monies to young adult honorees, fulfills requests of terminally ill children through its Dream 4 Kids program, provides work experience for public service minded youth, and sponsors the Art of Caring contest, encouraging elementary school students to express what caring means to them through the medium of photography.

The institute sponsors the Caring Hall of Fame in the Frederick Douglass Museum, where the inspiring stories and photographs of all awardees are on display. This historic site is located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.
